Botanical Casts

My work begins with plants and flowers and an interest in the different ways we collect and classify the natural world.

I use real flowers and plants to make sculptural impressions in plaster and Jesmonite, arranging them into panels, grids and larger installations. I often crop or reposition sections of a plant, creating something quite different from its original form.

I'm interested in the contrast between the order of botanical collections, taxonomy and colour charts, and the unpredictability of the plants themselves. Imperfections are an important part of my work, so I keep broken stems, wilting flowers and incomplete impressions rather than removing them. The structure and order come from how I arrange the finished work, rather than trying to make the plants themselves look perfect.
